A Sustainable Design Connected to its Surroundings
Dubbed the “Flat House” by MK27, this home is discreetly positioned at the highest point of the land. Its most striking feature is the flat green roof that seamlessly blends with the surrounding grass. The architects have truly thought of everything, integrating solar panels and skylights into the canopy, considering the roof as the fifth facade of the building.
From a bird’s-eye view, the house almost disappears into the landscape, emphasizing its eco-friendly design. Structurally, it represents a rigid platform supported not by beams, but directly by pillars. As seen in the photos, these pillars are modularly distributed along three axes.
According to MK27, these cross-shaped metal pillars have the elegant proportions typical of Miesian architecture. Beneath the roof, there are two spaces: the first contains service areas, a gym, and TV and game rooms, while the second immediately reveals five bedrooms with bathrooms.
The property also features several living rooms that can be completely opened or closed with sliding glass doors, allowing for easy access. When the doors are open, the house seamlessly transforms into a terrace surrounded by nature.
The interior furniture is classic, with low and solid wooden designs, allowing for ample airflow and easy movement throughout the house, in line with its eco-friendly design. The only detail that contrasts with the horizontal layout of the house is the colorful hanging chair, strategically placed for the comfort of the residents. Another visual and structural effect is provided by a striking vertical brick wall.

Among the pioneers of this venture were Amanda Temponi, Carlos Costa, Diana Radomysler, Giovanni Meirelles, and Lair Reis. They were soon joined by Laura Guedes, Lia, Luciana Antunes, Marcio Tanaka, Mariana Ruzante, Mariana Simas, Oswaldo Pessano, Pedro Ribeiro, Regiane Leao, Renata Furlanetto, Samanta Cafardo, and Suzana Glogowski.
These young architects are all passionate about the Brazilian modernist movement and strive to carry its legacy forward in their projects. MK27’s designs stand out for their simplicity, attention to detail, and impeccable finishing, as showcased in this stunning house. Kogan, the founder of the company, is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and also teaches at the Escola de Cidade and the Politecnico di Milano.
It was here that Kogan recently completed his Master’s degree in Education, Society, and Culture. He initially worked as a film director until he made his first feature film in 1988. However, facing bankruptcy, he shifted his focus towards architecture. Kogan is the mastermind behind all of MK27’s projects and is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and a council member of the São Paulo Museum of Art.
Epoca magazine considers him one of the 100 most influential people in Brazil. His team of architects has been working with him for over 10 years. Over the years, MK27 has also won numerous national and international awards, a testament to the quality and impact of their work.
